The 2nd leg of the Junior Kayak Sprint Series, organised by Lagoon Life, took place at Kraal Bay on Saturday 4 Feb. The series was started 5 years ago by the then Western Cape Canoe Union coach, Robert Hegedus a Hungarian World Sprint Champion. He noticed a lack of structure in developing good sprint canoeists in this country and together with coaches at the various clubs, set about putting in place structures to develop this aspect of the sport. There was also a need to encourage the youth and the previously disadvantaged to get involved in the sport. A successful application for funding by the National Lottery provided equipment for the program and Robert coached the kids and the coaches in the techniques required for sprint racing. Image

The local coaches at Lagoon Life have, over the last 5 years, taught more than 100 kids from all backgrounds the techniques and safety aspects of canoeing. Some of these kids have gone on to achieve success in their age groups by competing against the best in the Western Cape in these Sprint Series Races. At the Kraal Bay event, some 11 kids, aged between 6 & 12 represented Langebaan against kids from Paarl, Milnerton, Tygervalley and Peninsula Canoe Clubs. Several schools have teamed up with their local clubs, the clubs provide the equipment and coaching and the schools ensure the kids attend the sessions and gain recognition as a fully fledged school sport. Bridge House School in Franschoek have formed a very successful partnership with the Paarl Canoe Club and it was their kids who dominated proceedings on Saturday. They are the most successful school in SA and regularly dominate the SA Schools Championships.

The races are held over 4 distances, from 500m to 2000m and are split into age categories from U8 to U18, boys and girls. The Langebaan kids that excelled in their categories were Declan French & Kino Meintjes, 1st& 2nd in the Boys U8, Luca Ceruti & Jaque Theron, 2nd& 3rd Boys U10 and Olivia Rademan & Erin Maltby, 1st& 2nd Girls U10. All who took part thoroughly enjoyed the day, the great weather and the wonderful setting that Kraal Bay provides.
