Breezathon 2010 - The Wrap!
Written by Rob Meintjes

The 10th anniversary event took place on Sunday in the most perfect conditions, the overnight wind had died down and for the 1st time in 5 years the weather played no adverse role in the event. This allowed the 49 competitors to enjoy the event and the stunning scenery of the route in and around the Langebaan Lagoon. The addition of a 1km swim option for those not keen to paddle the 3km's around the Island was a huge success, the leading male paddler and swimmer exited the water within seconds of each other and the leading lady in each leg also came out very close together. The new cycle route into the National park was also very well received and much enjoyed by all participants.

Henry de Beer, a regular Iron Man competitor, took advantage of the great swim conditions and then ripped the field apart with a blitz performance on the bike, he finished with a great run to win the individual male swim section with plenty to spare. His wife, and fellow Iron Man competitor, Abby kept it in the family by taking the ladies race. In the traditional Breezathon event of paddle/cycle/run, Rob Meintjes was first male home and Marina Ceruti the leading lady. "The Book", Steve & Stacey page, a father and daughter combination won the, increasingly popular, tandem category. "Drie Pikkewyne", consisting of Richard Phillips, Marius Strydom & Neno Junius won the team event.

There were some really standout performances on the day, none more so than the tremendous effort of event founder, Georges Willis, who is currently undergoing chemotherepy, in managing to complete the race, thus allowing him to keep up his record and join Rob & Cajsa Meintjes as the only competitors to have done all 10 races since the Breezathon's inception in 2001. Well done Georges, an extremely courageous effort under the circumstances, we all wish you well and hope that your extreme bravery and strength helps you to conquer your health challenges too!

ImageAnother heartwarming effort was that of young Kino Meintjes, who at the tender age of just 5 years old became the youngest ever participant to take part in the event. Kino was the anchorman for his team "Lightning McQueen" and ran the full 5km run leg on his own with Mom and Dad merely providing him with some company along the way, he needed no assistance or coercion, the promise of a trophy for his efforts was more than enough motivation to see him through. Kino's older sister, Nikita, was the 1st junior (U15) individual competitor across the line.

Individual Leg Winners:

  Male   Female
3km Paddle: Rob Meintjes 15:25 Cajsa Meintjes 20:41
1km Swim: Dimitri Panagiotidis 15:05 Abby de Beer 21:38
21km Cycle: Henry de Beer 40:14 Desiree Strydom 46:28

Lagoon Life Water Festival - 2010 - The Wrap
Written by Rob Meintjes

The 2nd Lagoon Life Water Festival was a great success. Blessed with wonderful weather, on Saturday it was like clockwork, perfect windless conditions for the surfski and SUP races in the morning, a light wind in the arvo for the sailing race and a cool evening for the trail run - perfect! It did get a bit too windy on the Sunday but provided a good test for the guys attempting to qualify for the ultra-long distance races PE-EL and Cape Point Challenge.

The Driftwoods Lagoon Dash attracted some 152 paddlers for the 7 & 15km courses, a new winner was crowned in the men's category where Tom Schilepoort just pipped world-champion Dawid Mocke to the line. In the ladies, Nikki Mocke won the title for the 2nd time having won it back in 2004, full results available here. In the SUP race there were 11 competitors, men's winner this year was Ivan van Vuuren and the winning lady was Brigette van Aswegan. Results here.

The hobie sailors got just enough wind to enjoy their race, The Pearlys Dial Rock Sailing Challenge. It was won by Paul Lagesse and Johnny vd Vyver. Results here.

Saturday evening saw the inaugural running of the Kontiki Twilight Trail Run, a stunning new trail was used that really showcased some of the best off-road routes available alongside the lagoon and right here in the town. Some 43 runners lined up for the start outside Kontiki Restuarant and made there way onto the beach and the marked trails. Winner in the long run (approx 9km) was Phil Norton in an incredible time of 37m19s, 1st lady was our own, Helette Basson in 42m20s. The 5km route winners were Adrian Ceruti, Kathryn Uren and Kyle Meintjes was 1st junior. Results here.

Sunday morning started with the 50km PE-EL qualifier, 31 hardened paddlers set off in seemingly benign conditions. Once they had gone a guppie race was staged were 10 aspirant young paddlers got their chance to race on the calm waters. When the PE-EL guys returned from their loop to Kraal Bay another 41 Cape Point Qualifier hopefuls joined them for another loop to Kraal Bay and then out around Jutten Island with a finish at Blue Bay Lodge in Saldanha. The weather turned quite quickly shortly after they set off and eventually a safety call was made and the back half of the field was prevented from rounding Jutten and sent straight to Saldanha. A huge thanks to the NSRI with 2 ducks on the water and the duck of Atlantic Yachting for their support on the water. Qualifying times here.

The NSRI Mykonos Station are the main beneficiaries of the Festival and it is thanks to the support of the many participants that we are proudly able to make a donation to them of R4500 as a result of funds raised during the festival!

There are some stunning photo's available to view and purchase of all the events at www.capetownsportphotography.co.za.

Well done to all who competed, many athletes took part in 3 of the events! See you next year!
